Summer is synonymous with long days filled with outdoor activity. Whether you are hiking outdoors or surfing on the beach, eye protection is essential. Many of us remember to put on sunscreen when we head outdoors but at the same time forget to put on a pair of sunglasses. If your skin can be easily sun damaged, so can your eyes! UV damage can lead to future problems like cataracts and the clouding of vision. To avoid these potential health hazards GW Vision has a few suggestions to help you protect your eyes while still enjoying your time in the sun.
When leaving the house during daytime, don’t forget to put on a pair of sunglasses. A good pair will lie close to the face and block both UVA and UVB rays. You can also get polarized lenses to minimize glare from the sunlight.
Summer also entails a lot of swimming – which also means you are subjecting your eyes to foreign substances such as chlorine and bacteria. Swimming with contacts on can trap waterborne bacteria between your eye and lens, causing a serious infection. Chlorine can also be an irritant to your eyes, so remember to wash out your eyes with water after every swim.
For those of you who spend most of the day in the office, indoor eye health is important too! Vision impairment can be caused by serious eyestrain from computer use. To relieve strain on your eyes, take short breaks from the computer and focus on a distant object. Periodically refocusing your eyes can help preserve your vision.
With these tips you can now enjoy your summer while protecting your eyes! For more advice as well as vision correction procedures, visit www.gordonweissvision.com

GBW Vision is now featured on PBS’s American Health Journal. One of the procedures that is discussed is our Progressive Multifocal LASIK with IntraLase (PML), which is a groundbreaking technique that allows our doctors to perform laser vision surgery for people who wear reading or progressive eyeglasses or contact lenses to see up close. In addition to this exciting new vision correction procedure, other surgery options such as implantable contact lenses, cataract surgery and Custom PRK are also presented.
GBW Vision offers Custom PRK as an alternative to LASIK, because as everyone’s eyes are different, so are the appropriate procedures to correct vision. Custom PRK is better for those who have existing eye problems or a thin cornea. If it’s hard to visualize how LASIK and PRK work our Health Journal spot shows these surgeries in amazing detail.
If that isn’t interesting enough, you can also see a live surgery on the TV spot as well!
Our segment also shows some interesting features of GBW Vision. One of the great characteristics about our sunny San Diego office is that is it a one stop destination for all eye needs. Our diagnostic, surgery, and optical center are all in the same location, making it easy for anyone to come and see the step-by-step process that GBW takes its patients through.
Interested in knowing more? You can view our feature on Cox Cable 4 Saturday mornings or Sunday evenings at 10:00pm. Visit us at www.seeasyoungasyoufeel.com or on YouTube.
